Hampshire Constabulary has appointed 24 Equine Liaison Officers. Their role is to act as a point of contact for those concerned about improving security at their stables and making those who have horses or operate stables less of a target for those intent on theft. All the liaison officers have a knowledge of equine-related matters. To contact any Equine Liaison Officer email: equine@hampshire.pnn.police.uk including the name of the officer you need to contact in the subject, or tel: 0845 045 45 45. For contact details of the current Equine Liaison Officers, click here.
Their role is also to act as a conduit for information sharing between other local officers and Hampshire Horsewatch, both at a local and county level. There are several police officers appointed as local Equine Liaison Officers for Hampshire HorseWatch in the MRC area. Every year horses and equine equipment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds is stolen in Hampshire. Specialist thieves target stables and other rural premises where they know security might not be so tight and where it is less likely that someone will be around. And they know that there is a strong possibility that what they steal cannot be personalised by the real owner.
As a response to this problem Hampshire Constabulary is spearheading a Hampshire Horsewatch scheme in a bid to cut this tide of thefts and heartache for the owners of horses. The scheme's aim is to offer advice and guidance to all those involved in equestrian pursuits - no matter how large or small their roles might be - on the best ways to ensure they don't get an unwelcome call from the equine criminals. Hampshire Horsewatch has a web-site http://www.hampshire.police.uk , navigate to the Horsewatch page via the Local Community and Crime Prevention menu items. The site provides advice on cheap and simple crime prevention measures that horse and stable owners could take to protect their property and animals, a database of identifiable equine equipment and horses that have been stolen, along with photographs, and news items. It also offers the chance to join Hampshire HorseWatch.
As part of the scheme Hampshire Constabulary has appointed Detective Inspector David Collings as the Force Equine Liaison Officer and has appointed 24 Equine Liaison Officers across the two counties who will be the point of contact for anyone concerned about equine crime and what they can do to prevent it. You can contact a Hampshire Horsewatch representative on 07762 754788.'
A company called TrailerWatch is offering a database of stolen trailers on their website www.trailerwatch.com, tel: 01206 337580. Very useful if you are thinking of buying a trailer. They also offer a service where you can register your trailer with them, and sell a security pack which includes ‘SmartWater' which is an Ultra Violet marking tool.
